Hey Marshall

We had an issue come up in our game last night and was just looking for some clarification on the ruling. There was a play at first base that was called safe, which was correct. On the the Throw to base the ball went out of play and the umpire awarded the runner two bases, which sent him from first to third. His justifacation was that the runner had already made it to the base, therefor third was granted. just wondering if this was a correct call.
thanks

I am not Marshall, but... I can answer this question.

Indeed, the call made by the Umpire was the correct call. The ruling for a ball thrown that goes out-of-play is that the the base-runner is awarded 2 bases from the TIME of the throw. (NOT from the time the ball goes out-of-play). Therefore, if the base-runner had already made it to first base BEFORE the throw then he is awarded third base, BUT if the base-runner was on his way to first at the time of the throw, he would be awarded his two bases by taking him to first then to second. In your case, if the base-runner was on first base already before the throw, then his two bases takes him to second then to third.

Hope this clarifies things,

Just to re-iterate what Chris said.

That if the runner had reached first at the time of the throw, he/she would be awarded third base. Otherwise if the throw was made as the runner was approaching first, then the runner would only be awarded first and second (two bases).
