Hi Marshall

Just wondering if there is a rule for the pitcher to come to a complete stop before pitching.Gave the pitcher a warning for not stopping before the pitch. He argued that the batter was in the box and he could pitch and i told him that he had to stop before pitching.Pitch would pitch right away as soon as he got the ball from the backcatcher. If there is a rule and they con't to "quick pitch" is it consider an illegal pitch. :-\

Andy,

Yes. If a pitcher pitches immediately after receiving the ball from the catcher and the batter is not ready even though he/she is in the batter's box, it would be considered a quick pitch and declared an illegal pitch.

As an umpire, you should anticipate this and hold your palm up to the pitcher to not pitch until the batter is ready.
